Walert // Trichosurus vulpecula // Common Brushtail Possum

Brushtail Possums are the largest species of possum in Australia and also one of the most widely distributed! DELWP studies have found that Brushtail possums spend roughly 45% of their time sleeping, compared to the measly 30% that humans do. As well as this only 30% of the adult Brushtail population are males, due to territorial disputes and probably unlicensed DIY electrical work. Brushtail possums are much larger than Common Ringtail Possums, weighing from 1.2 - 4.5kg on average. Their diet consists primarily of leaves, flowers and other plant material which is supplemented with bird eggs (and sometimes young birds) as well as insects. As mentioned Brushtail Possums can be very territorial creatures, meaning that if one is to inhabit a possum box in your backyard, it is now you and the possums backyard, with the likely hood of other brushtails or smaller species of possum like ringtail possums inhabiting the area being ruled out almost entirely.

Box setup: If you can, it's best to position the box on a tree with neighbouring mid-story and canopy vegetation, so the possums have shrubs and trees to jump to, feed on and enjoy close to their doorstep. Thankfully these critters like keeping their nest nice and tidy so seasonal cleaning isn't necessary, giving these boxes (especially the hardwood models) a great lifespan! Liv recommends only one species type of possum per backyard area if incorporating a Brushtail box due to competition between individuals and other species.
