This gorgeous species of possum inhabits a large portion of the south-eastern coast of Australia, spanning as West as the land of the Kaurna people (“Adelaide”) and as far north-east as Gimuy (“Cairns”). This adorable nocturnal critter survives on the leaves, flowers and fruit of both native and introduced species of plants, and is the only species of possum where the father is known to help raise the young. During the day they curl up in a spherical nest known as a ‘drey’. Fortunately even though I haven't figured out a spherical box design yet, they will happily inhabit square boxes like the ones I make. Common ringtail possums live and nest in small family units (in comparison to more solitary species like Brushtail possums) which means you get more possum for the money with a box or two in your backyard!
Box setup: If you can, it's best to position the box on a tree with neighbouring mid-story and canopy vegetation, so the possums have shrubs and trees to jump to, feed on and enjoy close to their doorstep. The hole on this box is small enough to only allow ringtail possums inside, if you would rather some chunky possum action in your backyard, give brushtail possums [LINK] a look. Thankfully these critters like keeping their nest nice and tidy so seasonal cleaning isn't necessary, giving these boxes (especially the hardwood models) a great lifespan! Liv recommends only one species type of possum per backyard area, as there bigger brothers brushtail possums can be very territorial :P
